The solo woman's first-week checklist

What to do before you land, the night you arrive and in your first seven days.

Before you fly

  • Register your trip with your embassy (STEP for US citizens) so they can reach you in an emergency.
  • Buy an eSIM so you have data the second you land. No hunting for airport Wi-Fi.
  • Share your itinerary and accommodation address with two people back home.
  • Book your first 3 nights somewhere with a 24-hour front desk or a verified host.
  • Screenshot your address in the local language for taxi drivers.

The night you arrive

  • Use an official taxi rank or a ride app. Never accept a ride from someone who approaches you inside the airport.
  • Arrive in daylight when you can. If not, pre-book your transfer.
  • Check door locks and windows. A portable door wedge alarm costs under $15.
  • Save local emergency numbers (112 works across the EU).

Your first week

  • Walk your neighborhood in daytime and at night with a friend or a group.
  • Find your nearest pharmacy, clinic and 24-hour supermarket.
  • Go to one meetup. A Nomadista city circle, a co-working event or a language exchange.
  • Split your cash and cards between two places. Carry a decoy wallet in busy areas.
  • Trust your gut. Leaving is always allowed.
