Every digital nomad visa, ranked for 2027
Where you can legally live and work remotely, what it costs and how long it takes.

First, the honest basics
A tourist stamp is not a work permit. Most countries let you visit for up to 90 days, but working remotely on a tourist entry sits in a grey zone. A digital nomad visa (DNV) makes it legal, gives you a residence card, and makes renting, banking and getting a phone plan much easier.
Income thresholds below are approximate and change often. Always confirm on the country's official consulate site before you apply.
Our top picks for women
- Portugal (D8): around 4x the Portuguese minimum wage per month. Safe, English-friendly, huge women's community in Lisbon and Porto. Path to residency.
- Spain (Digital Nomad Visa): roughly €2,700+/month. Up to 5 years. Great for Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia and Seville.
- Greece (DNV): about €3,500/month. Island life in winter is quiet and cheap; Athens is a fast-growing nomad hub.
- Croatia: about €3,000/month, up to 18 months, and remote income can be tax-free while there.
- Mexico (Temporary Resident): based on savings or income, up to 4 years. Mexico City, Oaxaca and Mérida are favorites.
- Costa Rica (Rentista / DNV): about $3,000/month, with local tax exemptions on foreign income.
- Colombia (Digital Nomad): low threshold (around 3x the local minimum wage). Medellín's El Poblado and Laureles are popular.
- Thailand (DTV): a 5-year multiple-entry visa with flexible stays of up to 180 days each.
- Japan (Digital Nomad): high income bar (around ¥10M/year), 6 months, ideal for a once-in-a-lifetime season.
How to apply without losing your mind
- Gather: passport valid for 12+ months, 3–6 months of bank statements, a contract or client letters, health insurance and a criminal background check (apostilled).
- Book your consulate appointment early. Slots can be 4–8 weeks out.
- Translate documents with a certified translator if the country asks for it.
- Keep digital and paper copies of everything. You will be asked again at immigration.
